About When We Shine
When WE Shine Foundation was born out of the inspiration from an International a multi-media Arts4Change workshop that took place in Pune, India in 2016. The seed was planted, the recognition of a universal human desire to belong, and to work for something greater than ourselves. When one person allows the world to see the fullness of their heart and spirit, it gives permission to us all! We are here to show the world what’s possible When WE Shine!
Melinda Caroll, Founder/Executive Director
Melinda served as Youth Education Coordinator for the ArtPlace America creative placemaking grant project on Maui called, Malamalama Maui from January 2017 to July 2018. During that time, the benefits of arts integration, creative placemaking and social artistry became clearly visible and practical as healthy community building solutions, adding value, and even healing broken social systems in her island home.
Melinda’s career as a professional Singer/Song-writer, performer, National Song-leader for Girl Scouts of the USA, 5-Rhythms Dance teacher and fearless collaborator with children has taken her around the world and taught her the value and need for Arts Integration in our public school systems and communities as a way of growing not just artists, but creative thinkers who are not afraid to tackle difficult situations.
Melinda has written, recorded and produced 100’s of songs and a dozen songbooks. She has performed in numerous concerts and facilitated world-wide song-writing and song leading workshops since 1989. She brings creativity, inspiration, imagination and passion to the music arts of singing, performing, collaborative song-writing and story telling and she loves sharing her passion with children and adults world-wide. David Kauahikaua, Vice President
David Kauahikaua serves as Vice-President of When WE Shine. He brings a rich and experienced background as a producer/arranger/engineer/keyboard player who has been involved in the recording industry in Hawaii since the early 80’s. One of the first in Hawaiʻi to use computers to enhance music production. David has worked as a musical director for numerous well- known Hawaiian performers and musicians including Don Ho, Loyal Garner, Frank De Lima
David was honored with the 2017 Nā Hōkū Hanohano award for “Engineering / General Category” and his original composition “Kailua Rain” was a final ballot nominee for “Instrumental of the Year” in 2018. He was awarded “Outstanding Arranger” in the 1981 First Hawaiian Music competition for his orchestral arrangement of Loyal Garner’s “I Donʻt Want to Go Away.”
David and Melinda Caroll have produced over 40 music projects and albums together, including 16 CD’s for Girl Scouts of the USA, plus they have co-produced numerous other children’s original music, including Songs for Change in 2018 and Keiki Songs for Change, 2019.
Currently, David helps people realize their musical visions through programming, arranging and producing their songs.

Andrea Scholz, Sec./Treasurer
Hailing from the San Francisco Bay area, Andrea attended the Academy of Art University for Graphic Design. She spent many years as an entrepreneur and manager in the rock and mineral business as well as the manager of an art gallery in Haines, Alaska.
She was the project manager and a developer for the award winning ilovenelson.com website for Nelson, British Columbia, which enjoyed steady local and worldwide traffic for many years.
Andrea put both her graphic design and management expertise to the test when she become the publisher of The Valley Sentinel newspaper in Northern, British Columbia. Within a year The Valley Sentinel was recognized, for the first time in 25 years, by the Canadian Community Newspaper Association with a General Excellence Award. Andrea added The Fitzhugh newspaper to her Graphic Artist experience while continuing her publishing role at The Valley Sentinel at the same time.
On the beautiful island of Maui, Andrea works in the tech industry as well as uses her graphic design skills for many local and mainland businesses.
